A Brief History of Denim + Golf

Denim has long been a controversial clothing item when it comes to golf attire. In 2023, no denim signs can be spotted at courses all around the country. While a staple of American fashion, it's not always a welcome sight on the course.

Why?

01. Golf has long been associated with exclusive clubs and the top-tier of society, while denim has its origins in workwear and casual clothing.

Dating back to California in the mid-1800s, for laborers in the fields and mills, denim was a durable and inexpensive clothing option that was widely available.

Cue the mid-1900s and “Polite society” was disturbed by denim’s growing association with biker gangs and teen turmoil such that it was even banned in some schools.

02. Aside from its class connotations, if you’ve ever worn selvedge denim jeans, you know how heavy and restrictive they can be, making walking let alone swinging a club properly, rather difficult.

Cue the original Denim Golf Hat by Good Lion Golf.

With the mantra GOOD > SAFE ever in mind, Good Lion Golf is the first golf brand to integrate denim into our line of apparel, as we seek to shake up stodgy golf style.

Available in natural, bleached and black denim, we have a hat for every golfer. Plus, like your favorite jean jacket, our hats only get better with each wear/round.

When you rock any of our Denim Golf Hats, it’s not only a fashion statement, it’s a nod to the continued evolution of golf and its need to grow ever more inclusive.

Golf doesn’t need anymore gatekeepers.
It needs a Good Lion.
